So I’ve been obsessed with the Neil Young’s video for “Wonderin” from 1983. SO good. The backstory to the record is pretty entertaining, too. In ‘83, Neil recorded a pure country album called Old Ways, and Geffen, his label at the time, was horrified and rejected it. They shelved the album, and demanded that Neil record a rock ‘n’ roll record and quit trying to be a country singer. So Neil went back into the studio and knocked out an old school rockabilly LP called Everybody’s Rockin’ — which was just a giant middle-finger to Geffen. Geffen pulled the plug on the ’50s rockabilly record before he could finish, because they thought it was an even worse idea than the country album. They still released it, but it’s only 25-minutes long.

Many Neil fans dismiss these records as the work of a dude trying to wriggle his way out of a record contract, but if you watch the video, it’s kind of amazing and hilarious. Critics have been pointing out how David Lynch’s new album, Crazy Clown Time, has a heavy Neil influence at times, and after watching this video, which predates Blue Velvet by three years, you could say Lynch’s movies have a Neil influence, too.
