In 2011-2012, the total revenue of college sports in the US was $871.6 million. But student-athletes aren’t paid. That revenue pays for things like coaches’ salaries, building operations and programs that benefit student-athletes, etc.
Some critics have argued that NCAA athletes should be paid, but then you’d have to negotiate who gets paid what. Should the third-string punter on the football team that sells out a 70,000-seat stadium earn more than the Olympics-bound fencer that no one watches? It’d be a pretty slippery slope.
In the end, student-athletes aren’t paid — they know what they’re signing up for, and willingly choose to participate so they can improve their game, play with hard-working teammates and gain positive experiences that pay off later in life. It ends up being a win-win situation for most.
